This challenging off-hour renovation project of an occupied building included: column strengthening; slab edge extensions on the existing building to support an updated façade; expansion of the main lobby from a plain, single-level entrance to a spacious two-story atrium; and updated ADA-compliant exterior entry. A major overhaul of the main ten-story atrium included strengthening the structure to accommodate demolition of three lower floors, with the addition of four new escalators connecting the lower parking garage to the first floor.
The escalator pits consisted of three separate systems—foundation, wall, and framed deck—that included a multi-level exhaust shaft system. The tenants, parking garage, cafeteria and snack shop were kept fully operational during the construction process, which required extensive coordination between trades, general contractor, engineer, and architect.
