This project, also known as the “The Bunny Mellon Healing Garden Dedicated to the First Ladies of the United States”, was constructed on the second floor roof of the Children’s National Medical Center at 11 Michigan Avenue in Washington DC. The architectural walls and planters presented many challenges due to the number of small radii and the embedment of a small slot to contain the rope lighting. Extensive hand work was required to infill and patch several areas of the existing roof deck. To minimize disruption to the hospital, all the concrete was placed on Saturdays.
