The Alexander Court project was a major renovation of a partially occupied nine-story building fronting L St. NW and spanning the entire block from 20th to 21st St. The project started off with the addition of three 50’ x 50’ footings placed to support seven new elevator shafts running up through the existing building. Several additional footings, columns, topping slabs, and curbs were added/enhanced to support three new floors and allow a portion of the second floor to become an enlarged atrium. A considerable amount of work had to be performed off hours, with early morning and Saturday pours to complete this 10,000 cubic-yard project. Two substantial challenges were 1) placing a building-height concrete wall abutting a stairway while keeping it open as a fire exit, and 2) adding a freestanding 13-story elevator and shear wall on the exterior of the building.
