A multi-story steel frame building occupied by NIH had to be temporarily evacuated when it was discovered that the exterior steel columns had become corroded. The building was condemned by the Montgomery County Inspections Department until remediation of the columns was complete. Hardesty Concrete was contracted to immediately provide a structural concrete encasement of each deteriorated column. We worked closely with the GC, the design team and other subcontractors as the steel remediation progressed.
To complete the repair and prevent future water infiltration, #11 rebar was welded to the steel base plates. Rebar stirrups were placed around both the vertical rebar and the steel column and encased in a high strength concrete mix. At the conclusion of each column remediation all the curbs and sidewalks were restored to original.
